Cool video...but huh?

I ran across this video and found it quite interesting:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=locgv...eature=related

And hopefully not offensive since I don't understand a word of it!:p

I would love to know the historical context of the video from someone familiar with Czech, and also the history of the military there. Some of the photos appear to have been taken in the 1940s (and maybe earlier?) - though I admit I am awful with dates - but some of the dogs have a very familiar looking white mask...

Neat pictures whatever the case!!! Love finding stuff like this!!!

Hi! I am Czech, but I have to disappoint you. I think the song is about German Shepherd. ;) It was described in other topic - most people in Cz.R. use "vlčák" (from "vlk" - wolf) for shepherds, but correct is "ovčák" (from "ovce" - sheep).

GalomyOak 11-12-2011 23:10

I'm not disappointed! I figured they were GSDs. I was just very intrigued by some of the light markings on many of the dogs, especially in the face - so close to our dogs. It's a cool video, regardless - wonderful old photos!!!

I know. ;-) Maybe if the pictures were color, not black and white, the dog(s) would look completely different.

Yes, I think so to :) And I did send this video and questions to CZ and SL club about one year ago...

They did aswer that it was just normal GSD´s

But to me it looks like that there might have bean some wolf added looong before the start of are breed in 1958...

PS, Mist, the first photo is in color, DS.

I think 95% czech population use "vlčák" for German Shepherds. Can you imagine, how it drives me crazy?...

Baz 15-12-2011 16:17

The military connection is from the second world war when there were Czech squadrons in the (British) Royal Air Force (RAF). But even more annoying than people calling German Shepherds "vlčáks" are those who call my vlčák a Czechoslovakian "ovčák" it drives me crazy!

Haha, thats's funny because next year I do want to have have sheep in my garden Michaela, Likejna met her first sheep & goats in Prague's Old Town Square on Monday & reacted well, only trying to sniff their backsides as if they were dogs :) (& a quick English lesson, the plural of sheep is sheep, just like in Czech 1 ovce, 2 ovce; 1 sheep, 2 sheep, 10 sheep etc);-)

Thanks for the English lesson Baz - I did not know it. :p See, I wasn´t so far away with buying sheep for Likejna. :)
That is great, that you take her to such places, like Old Town Square is. Perfect place for socialization. But we are a little bit off topic... :)
